New Website for DMD Pioneers

I just started working on a new website for DMD Pioneers, the Yahoo! Groups mailing list I belong to and moderate for. It is currently in the early development stages so there is not much to see right now. I am not alone in the over all project as there will be multiple writers involved. My primary job right now is getting the content management system set up. It is going to use Joomla 1.5 for the CMS which is something I’m new to me but it is pretty powerful and should work out great.

The goal of the website is to provide a place for information about adults living with Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy, and to help them continue to beat the odds against it. It will soon be a place for blogs, articles, a special place to memorialize the fellow members who are no longer with us. It will also, of course, be used to promote the mailing list on Yahoo! Groups. You can check the progress on the site by visiting it at I will also periodically on my blog here at

What’s on my DVR?

Very little of what I watch is retained on my DVR because I usually delete stuff when I’m finished watching. So instead of listing what’s on it, I’ll list some shows I have scheduled to record as a series.

  • Heroes
  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars
  • MythBusters
  • Science of the Movies
  • Fringe
  • Medium
  • American Chopper
  • Head Games
  • Whose Line is it, Anyway? Re-runs (ABC Version)

John Hughes Films

John Hughes unfortunate untimely death was reported in the news yesterday, may God rest his soul.  The televised reports have consistently said that he will most be remembered for his coming-of-age teen movies of the 80’s, but it’s not those films that I will remember him for. Rather, I will remember him for the travel adventure comedies.

Today, the focus of comedy films seems to be complete irreverence, innuendo and blatant raunchiness.  It’s not say that John Hughes films didn’t deal with adult themes, they did, but it was delivered in a more meaningful way, not for the shock value.  His movies were goal driven and commonly featured a destination that seemed nearly impossible to get to due to all the obstacles thrown in along the way.  By the end of the movie the goal has been reached and viewers are left with a positive heartwarming experience.

One of my all-time favorite comedy movies, whom he wrote, produced and directed is Planes, Trains and Automobiles starring Steve Martin and the late John Candy. The film not only was full of humor but it had a lot of heart which is hard to find in today’s Hollywood comedies.  The film starts out with a man, Neal (Steve Martin), trying to get home for Thanksgiving who runs into an obnoxious traveling curtain ring salesman, Del (John Candy), who takes it upon himself to help Neal get home.  Neal goes from being a mild-mannered businessman to an enraged lunatic because he can’t seem to get away from accident prone Del no matter what he tries. In the end, Neal finds out Del was really a lonely man with nowhere to go and he invites Del to thanksgiving with his family.

Other notable films from John Hughes for me were:

Who shot first?

I think Han shot first because Greedo wouldn’t be able to collect Han’s debt to Jabba had he killed him.  Plus, Greedo was as good as dead anyway. If he couldn’t collect the debt from him, Jabba would kill him. If he shot and killed Han, Jabba would kill him.  But the again, if he killed Han and brought Jabba his head then Jabba might be okay with it except there’s no way Obi-Wan Kenobi would have let Greedo leave the bar.  My new Mos Eisley Cantina Bookends which are impossible to find for sale will keep me pondering…  Thanks to my Dad who was able to find and surprise me with them today.  They will be used to display my growing Star Wars Audiobook collection.

More Snow

It appears the bulk of the snowing has finally ended.  The picture of my van in the last post was before the additional 8-12 inches we received after the photo was taken. This is not normal for this area, it usually snows no more than 2-4 inches if it snows at all.  Hopefully Western Washington has seen the worst.  I have many things to be thankful for.  I had no power outages, plenty of food and heat.  Now I watch the snow melt…

It’s snowing in the low lands of Western Washington with near record lows.  If you’re reading this blog message, it means my HughesNet satellite dish is still working in spite of the snow.  I’m not going anywhere until it melts, not because it’s just not a good idea to travel when it’s like this, but that my van would never make it up my driveway.  We just had it snowing for several hours and it seems to have stopped… for now anyways.  No, wait, I spoke too soon, it’s still snowing.  I hope a green Christmas is right around the corner.
